The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a resource for the community to learn about toxic chemical releases and pollution prevention activities reported by industrial and federal facilities. TRI data supports informed decision-making by communities, government agencies, companies, and others.  Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) created the TRI.

TRI tracks the management of certain toxic chemicals that may pose a threat to human health and the environment. U.S. facilities in different industry sectors must report annually how much of each chemical is released to the environment and/or managed through recycling, energy recovery and treatment.

Who is required to report?

Facilities that report to TRI are typically involved in manufacturing, metal mining, electric power generation, chemical manufacturing, and hazardous waste treatment. Not all industry sectors are covered by the TRI Program, and not all facilities in the covered sectors are required to report to TRI. The chemicals used must exceed specific thresholds.  EPA issues an updated guidance document yearly.

When and where to submit TRI/Form R Reports? 

TRI/Form R Reports are required to be submitted by July 1st of each year. The reports are required to be submitted to EPA through the Toxics Release Inventory Made Easy Web (TRIMEweb).
